ABOUT SEGA

Sustainability

SEGA aims to establish the SEGA Secondary School for Girls as a fully sustainable, self-supporting operation, once the school is up and running. While there are several examples of good secondary schools in Tanzania who successfully meet their running costs through school fees alone, because the SEGA SCHOOL aims to reach economically disadvantaged girls and needs to support at least 50% of its student body on scholarships, its costs will be higher. Several strategies to minimize recurring operational costs, and to ensure financial viability over the long term have been devised and are being incorporated into architectural design and campus layout.

Strategies to Reduce Recurring Operating Costs:

• Use of solar panels for lighting, rainwater catchment system to supplement water supply, bio-gas fuel system for cooking to reduce energy costs, constructed wetlands for liquid waste removal to reduce maintenance costs
• Construction materials will be high quality burnt bricks, minimizing maintenance costs over time
• 10 acre agricultural plot producing vegetables, beans, and maize for student consumption
• On-site dairy for student milk supply

Strategies to Supplement School Fees to Cover Running Costs:

• Operation of a small conference center, with state of the art communications facilities through fiber optic network (coming soon to Morogoro) to be used on a for-hire basis
• Cultivation and sale of agricultural produce and indigenous fast-growing tree seedlings
